Hyla Willis is a Pittsburgh-based interdisciplinary artist and graphic designer and a longtime member of the subRosa art collective. She was born in Yuba City, California, and spent many formative years in Northern California and Seattle, Washington.

Willis holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts, and has been the recipient of two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships in New Genres, a Creative Capital grant in Emerging Fields, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Arts, and an Artist Opportunity Grant from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. She is a former fellow of the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and has served as a juror for the Ohio Arts Council. She teaches in the Media Arts Department of Robert Morris University, Moon Township, PA.

Willis has participated in improvisational and collaborative visual and sound arts for many years, performing with Blowhole, Michael Pestel, tENTATIVELY a cONVENIENCE, Trophy Wife, Cinnamon Cuddles & Crew Featuring Sloppy and Munchy, and the Firefly Tunnels Project.

Since 1998, Willis has been a core member of the subRosa feminist art collective, creating open-ended environments where participants engage with objects, texts and digital technologies to explore and critique the intersections of information and bio-technologies on women’s bodies, lives and work. With subRosa, Willis has has performed, exhibited, and lectured in the USA, Spain, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, Macedonia, Mexico, Canada, Slovenia, and Singapore, and has received many commissions for this work.
